Significant Upset in Bihar's Bankipur By-Election

The counting trends for the by-election in Bihar's Bankipur assembly seat are showing a remarkable shift. Prashant Kishor, the founder of the Jan Suraj Party, has made a strong start in his electoral journey on Monday (August 3). After the second round of counting, Kishor has established a solid lead of 1,161 votes over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha. Kishor has secured 3,795 votes, while Kumar has received 2,634 votes. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Rekha Kumari is in third place with 664 votes.

Importance of the By-Election

This by-election is Kishor's first direct electoral contest since launching the Jan Suraj Party, making it one of the most closely watched races in Bihar. The counting of votes is ongoing, and all eyes are on whether Kishor, contesting for the first time, can break the BJP's long-standing hold on this seat. A total of 26 candidates are in the fray. The voter turnout for the by-election held on July 30 was 34.30%, which is a decline of over seven percent compared to the 41.45% recorded in the previous assembly elections.

Context of the By-Election

The necessity for this by-election arose after BJP's national president Nitin Nawin resigned from the assembly seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha in April. Nawin had won the Bankipur seat in November 2025 for the fifth consecutive time, defeating RJD's Rekha Gupta by a margin of over 50,000 votes. The RJD has once again fielded Gupta for this by-election.

Kishor's Challenge Against BJP

This contest has gained significance as Prashant Kishor, a former electoral strategist, is contesting elections for the first time. The BJP, which has not lost this seat since 1995 (when it was known as Patna West), has fielded its youth wing leader Neeraj Kumar Sinha to defend this stronghold.

Previous Election Results

In the 2025 assembly elections, Nitin Nawin won the Bankipur seat with 98,299 votes (62.66% vote share), defeating RJD's Rekha Kumari, who garnered 46,363 votes (29.55%). This victory margin of over 51,000 votes is among the largest in the recent history of this seat, and the RJD is now attempting to reduce this gap to win.

Voter Turnout Insights

Meanwhile, the by-election in Bihar's Bankipur assembly seat recorded just over 34% voter turnout. Prashant Kishor's entry into the electoral arena poses a challenge to the BJP's dominance that has persisted for decades. According to the election commission, the voting percentage was only 34.24%, which is more than 7% lower than the 41.45% turnout in last November's assembly elections.
