Bhuvneshwar Kumar's T20I Comeback Raises Eyebrows After Poor Performance
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Struggles in T20I Series
The return of veteran Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the national team during the recent five-match T20I series against New Zealand has faced significant criticism due to his underwhelming performance.
In the T20I segment of the New Zealand tour, Bhuvneshwar participated in four matches, managing to secure just one wicket while allowing 180 runs, resulting in an alarming average of 180 and an economy rate of 11.25. His most disappointing outing occurred in the second T20I in Christchurch, where he recorded figures of 1/50 with an economy rate of 12.50 over four overs.
Despite his experience, expectations were high for Bhuvneshwar to spearhead the bowling attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. Unfortunately, he failed to meet these expectations upon his return to the national squad after a four-year hiatus.
Criticism from Former Players
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's lackluster performance has led former Indian cricketer and commentator Irfan Pathan to question the decision-making of the BCCI selectors regarding his inclusion.
In a discussion on his YouTube channel, Irfan labeled the decision to play Bhuvneshwar in the T20Is against New Zealand as a 'significant error,' suggesting that it would have been wiser to select him for the upcoming 50-over World Cup instead, which is closer than the next T20 World Cup.
"In my view, where did the selectors go wrong? They erred by including Bhuvneshwar Kumar in this series," stated the former cricketer. He acknowledged Bhuvneshwar's skills but questioned the rationale behind his selection given the timing of the T20 World Cup.
Bhuvneshwar's return to the T20I team followed two successful IPL seasons with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he took 17 and 28 wickets in consecutive editions. However, he could not replicate that form on the international stage.
Missed Opportunities for Emerging Talent
Irfan Pathan further emphasized that giving overs to the 36-year-old veteran limited opportunities for younger bowlers like Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav to gain essential experience on international pitches.
"By including him in this series, you missed the chance to provide young fast bowlers with valuable exposure," Pathan remarked. He suggested that a younger player could have filled Bhuvneshwar's role, allowing them to gain crucial experience.
India's next T20I challenge is a three-match series against Sri Lanka at home in December, starting with the first match in Rajkot on December 22. It remains uncertain whether Bhuvneshwar Kumar will keep his spot in the squad or if selectors will opt for younger talent.
