Bhuvneshwar Kumar Defends Bumrah's Approach

Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has come to the defense of Jasprit Bumrah regarding his approach to managing workload. He highlighted that many people fail to grasp the physical and mental challenges faced by fast bowlers, especially when competing under pressure in all three formats of the game. This statement follows criticism from various figures in the cricketing world, including former players, who questioned Bumrah's selective participation in the recent five-Test series in England.

Before the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy commenced, it was established that Bumrah would only participate in three out of the five Tests, a decision confirmed by chief selector Ajit Agarkar when announcing the expanded squad. However, Bumrah faced backlash for missing the decisive Test at The Oval, despite India losing all three matches he played.

In a thrilling conclusion to the series, a young Indian team led by Shubman Gill managed to secure a dramatic victory in the fifth Test, leveling the series at 2-2. Nonetheless, Bumrah's decision to limit his participation sparked controversy, with some critics suggesting he should have prioritized this important series. In a discussion on the Cricket Stories Podcast with Manvendra, Bhuvneshwar argued that it is unreasonable to expect Bumrah to play solely for public approval, given the demands placed on fast bowlers.

Bhuvneshwar remarked, 'Given the number of years Bumrah has been active across all formats, it is challenging for anyone to maintain that level of performance. With his unique bowling action, the risk of injury is always present. I had no issues with him playing in three out of five matches.'

He further explained, 'If the selectors are aware of what Bumrah can contribute and are comfortable with his participation, it’s because they recognize his potential impact in those three games. If a player can significantly contribute in three matches rather than playing all five, that should be acceptable. People often overlook the difficulties of sustaining performance over many years across formats.'

'There is also considerable pressure involved. To ensure a player can perform for an extended period, proper management is essential. Therefore, I had no concerns regarding his workload management.'

According to reports, Bumrah is set to return for the Asia Cup T20, which begins on September 9. His availability for the upcoming home Tests in the 2025–26 season remains uncertain. India is scheduled to host the West Indies for two Tests starting October 2, followed by a home series against South Africa in November.
