Bhuvneshwar's Impact in New Zealand

Mitchell Santner, the captain of New Zealand, has expressed that Bhuvneshwar Kumar, returning to the Indian T20I squad, could be a formidable opponent in the upcoming five-match series. He believes that the seasoned bowler will thrive in New Zealand's conditions as they prepare for the first match at Hagley Oval on Thursday.

After nearly four years away from the T20I format, Bhuvneshwar's skill in swinging the new ball is anticipated to be vital against New Zealand's batting order. Santner remarked, "Bhuvi will enjoy these conditions. If there's any assistance from the pitch, he will exploit it effectively." He added that even on flatter pitches in India, Bhuvneshwar has managed to generate movement with the ball, making him a challenging bowler in New Zealand.

He further noted the difficulties bowlers face in India, especially after recent high-scoring matches, but suggested that Bhuvneshwar might find the New Zealand conditions more favorable.

India's Batting Strength

India's captain, Shreyas Iyer, emphasized Bhuvneshwar's wealth of experience, which he believes will enhance the team's bowling lineup. Iyer stated, "Bhuvi brings a lot of experience, which we missed, especially after the IPL where many new bowlers emerged. His recent success in the IPL shows he knows how to excel in this format."

Santner's Concerns About India's Batting Lineup

While New Zealand is cautious about India's bowling capabilities, Santner also recognized the threat posed by India's explosive batting order, featuring players like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan, along with the promising Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. India previously triumphed over New Zealand by 96 runs in the T20 World Cup final, with significant contributions from Samson, Abhishek, and Kishan.

Santner acknowledged the power at the top of India's batting lineup and noted Sooryavanshi's potential impact if he plays in the series. He mentioned, "Although he didn't participate in the last series against the West Indies, I've witnessed his talent in the IPL. The strength of India's top order is evident, and if Sooryavanshi gets a chance, he could be a game-changer."

Adapting to Conditions

Santner anticipates varying conditions throughout the series, with the larger boundaries at Hagley Oval possibly benefiting bowlers in the first match. He stated, "Both teams must evaluate the conditions. If there's assistance for bowlers, it becomes challenging to play aggressively. However, we know India can be very difficult to stop when the conditions are favorable for batting."

He also highlighted the challenge of bowling left-arm spin against a batting lineup with several left-handers, emphasizing the need to adapt to the conditions and apply pressure rather than relying solely on spin.

The series will kick off with this opener, followed by four additional T20 matches before transitioning to limited-overs and Test formats.
