New Delhi, Oct 7: On Wednesday, Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay expressed his deep admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referring to him as an elder brother and likening him to an avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Tobgay praised Modi's unwavering 25 years of leadership, emphasizing that India's relationships with neighboring countries have been a significant focus during his tenure. He highlighted Modi's efforts in elevating the Global South's voice and successfully integrating the African Union as a permanent member of the G20.
In an opinion piece titled 'Modi's leadership reflects wisdom, courage, empathy', published in a prominent media outlet, Tobgay stated, "Viksit Bharat matters beyond India. PM Modi has consistently prioritized India's neighbors in international relations, advocating for the Global South and organizing the Voice of Global South Summits."
He further noted, "A stronger India translates to greater capabilities. A developed India will provide a larger market, enhanced capital and technology, and increased influence in shaping global agendas that reflect regional and Global South interests."
Reflecting on Modi's personal impact, Tobgay shared that he has always viewed him as a mentor and elder brother, whose public service has inspired him.
"As PM Modi marks 25 years in leadership, I recall our candid conversation in 2019 and look forward to our next meeting on March 14, 2024, when I will again be Prime Minister. I had previously told him I saw him as an avatar of Vishnu, and I have since reaffirmed that belief, identifying him with Kalki, the avatar associated with restoring order and renewal," he remarked.
Tobgay emphasized that a developed India means a developed Bhutan, recalling Modi's choice of Bhutan for his first foreign visit shortly after taking office in June 2014.
"During that visit, he encapsulated our relationship with the phrase B4B: Bharat for Bhutan; Bhutan for Bharat. This simple yet profound statement has guided our interactions over the years," Tobgay explained.
He acknowledged India's support during Bhutan's 11th Five-Year Plan, which enabled his government to implement an ambitious development agenda. Modi's continued assistance through the 12th Plan and the doubling of support for the 13th Plan to Rs 10,000 crore upon Tobgay's return to office in 2024 were also highlighted.
The Bhutan-India partnership, under the B4B framework, spans various sectors including education, healthcare, infrastructure, hydropower, technology, agriculture, and enterprise. Tobgay noted the significance of India's backing for the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) vision of the Bhutanese King.
"PM Modi has committed to fully supporting this initiative, which is already manifesting in improved rail links, border infrastructure, and enhanced air and digital connectivity. Moreover, Indian businesses are responding positively to PM Modi's support, with many investing in Bhutan's economic transformation and becoming founding members of GMC," Tobgay concluded.
