Bhubaneswar Railway Station's Parking Fee Surge Sparks Outrage Among Commuters

A recent hike in parking fees at Bhubaneswar railway station has left commuters in shock, with daily rates for two-wheelers soaring from Rs 12 to Rs 94. Many are calling the increase unjustified, especially students who are concerned about their limited budgets. The new rates, effective from June 13, have raised monthly fees significantly as well. Bhubaneswar Railway Station's Parking Fee Surge Sparks Outrage Among Commuters

Significant Increase in Parking Fees

In Bhubaneswar, a sudden and steep increase in parking fees for two-wheelers at the railway station has led to widespread dissatisfaction among commuters, who are labeling the change as both arbitrary and unreasonable.

Many motorcycle owners returning from the Raja holidays were taken aback by the new rates. The daily parking fee for two-wheelers has surged from Rs 12 to Rs 94, while bicycle parking fees have jumped from Rs 5 to Rs 24.

The monthly parking fees have also seen a significant rise. Reports indicate that the parking contract is renewed every three years, and the new rates took effect on June 13, following the transition from the previous contractor, Maa Tarini Security Services.

Previously, the parking fee was Rs 6 (inclusive of GST) for motorcycles and Rs 3 for bicycles for a maximum of 12 hours.

However, with the new contractor, D&S Associates, taking over management on June 13, the parking tariffs have drastically increased.

Under the new pricing structure, users of motorcycles or scooters will now pay Rs 47 for 12-24 hours, while bicycle users will pay Rs 12. For parking beyond 24 hours, the charges are Rs 24 for bicycles and Rs 94 for motorcycles. Monthly fees have been set at Rs 177 for bicycles and Rs 885 for motorcycles. A commuter expressed frustration, stating, “The increase is excessive. I used to park here daily, but these prices are unaffordable for the average person. The government needs to reconsider and lower the rates.” A student added, “As students, we lack a steady income. Our travel budget is very tight, and these high parking fees will significantly impact our expenses. The railway authorities and the government should address this concern.”

An official from the East Coast Railway (ECoR) clarified that the parking facility is intended solely for railway passengers. “Often, vehicles are left in the parking area for extended periods by non-passengers, which reduces availability for actual railway users. The updated rates aim to deter such misuse,” the official stated.
