Bhubaneswar, June 16: On Monday, the Commissionerate Police apprehended an individual accused of defrauding numerous job seekers of more than ₹43 lakhs under the guise of offering employment opportunities in both private and government sectors.
The suspect, identified as Debasish Das, 36, resides in Govindpur, which falls under the jurisdiction of Dhamnagar police in Bhadrak district.
Currently living in Kesura, within the Badagada police station area of Bhubaneswar, Das was arrested following a complaint lodged on June 14 by S. Kahna Achari from Ganjam district. Achari reported that he encountered a job advertisement on Google in 2023.
After seeing the ad, Achari reached out to Das using the phone number provided. Das promised to help Achari secure a job in private firms and through various government initiatives, including the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana.
Achari, along with several friends also seeking employment, met with Das, who subsequently introduced them to another individual named Jyotiranjan Paikray. Through a series of assurances, both Das and Paikray gained the trust of Achari and his companions.
As a result, the victims transferred a total of ₹43,33,000 in multiple installments to the bank accounts shared by the fraudsters via WhatsApp.
However, after two years, neither Das nor Paikray delivered any job opportunities to Achari or his friends. When they confronted the accused for either the promised jobs or a refund, the fraudsters allegedly refused and resorted to using abusive language, even threatening them if they persisted in their demands.
Left with no other options, the victims approached the police for assistance. Acting on their complaint, the Badagada Police took swift action and arrested Das in the Kesura area on Monday.
He was subsequently presented in court, where he was remanded to judicial custody. Police officials have indicated that efforts are underway to apprehend the absconding co-accused, Paikray.
