The procession of the centuries-old Bhaṭheli festival
Nalbari, April 23: The essence of community and tradition was palpable in Baruabari as residents joyfully marked the age-old Bhaṭheli festival on Thursday, showcasing their cultural heritage with fervor.
This festival, rooted in the practices of their ancestors, remains a vital aspect of the local cultural landscape. Participants engaged in a lively procession, carrying the Paura, a sacred emblem crafted from two bamboo poles adorned with gamusa from top to bottom.
People of all ages joined in the procession, coming together from various locations.
After the procession, rituals took place at the Vishnu temple located near the festival grounds. The beautifully decorated bamboo poles were raised ceremoniously, and prayers were offered for the community's peace, prosperity, and well-being.
Dating back over a century, the Bhaṭheli festival of Baruabari is deeply intertwined with the vibrant folk traditions of lower Assam.
Held annually on the 9th day of the Assamese month of Bohag, this event is rich in both cultural and spiritual importance.
In addition to the rituals, a lively trade fair enhanced the festive atmosphere, drawing visitors from surrounding areas. Various stalls, local attractions, and community gatherings created a joyful and vibrant setting that is anticipated to last well into the night.
