Eyewitness accounts describe a white van speeding into the crowd shortly after 10 PM local time, with witnesses recalling the vehicle moving at high speed before chaos ensued as people sought refuge in the park.
Local reports indicate that the vehicle was left abandoned at the scene, prompting a large emergency response that included police, firefighters, and paramedics. Images from the site depicted the extensive emergency efforts, with one injured individual being transported on a stretcher.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into this horrific incident, while Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner condemned the act as an assault on the values of a free and open society.
