GCL Returns to India in Tech Hub Bengaluru

This season marks the GCL's return to India for the second consecutive year, following its successful edition in Mumbai in 2025. After previous events in Dubai and London, the league is now set to take place in Bengaluru, a city known for its technological advancements, innovation, and burgeoning sports culture.

Insights from GCL and BookMyShow Officials

Gourav Rakshit, the Commissioner of the Global Chess League, stated, "GCL is designed to be experienced live, and Bengaluru will provide fans with an opportunity to engage closely with the action. We want fans to feel involved in every move and significant moment of the league." Anil Makhija, COO at BookMyShow, highlighted the league's team format as ideal for live audiences and praised India's rise as a chess powerhouse, attributing it to Viswanathan Anand's legacy and the emergence of new talents like Gukesh Dommaraju.

Understanding GCL's Rapid, Team-Based Format

Over the course of nine days, the six franchises will compete in GCL's rapid, team-based format, with each team consisting of six players across various categories: Icons, Superstar Men, Superstar Women, and Prodigies. Both men and women will compete on the same team, with each board contributing equally to the team's overall score. The fast-paced nature of the matches means that momentum can shift quickly, making the live experience a key aspect of the league's appeal.
