Bengaluru, July 15: A student in the eighth grade from a school in Mariyappanapalya is currently fighting for his life after reportedly attempting suicide, allegedly due to corporal punishment and discrimination by school staff.
This distressing event, which surfaced on Tuesday, has sparked outrage among the boy's family, who are demanding stringent action against the school's administration and the involved teachers. A case has been filed at the Jnanabharathi Police Station, and an investigation is currently in progress.
The parents claim that their son, who is enrolled under the Right to Education (RTE) quota, had a disagreement with two classmates. This issue was escalated to the headmaster, leading to the boy allegedly being physically punished by teachers.
The family asserts that the student suffered bruises and other injuries and was barred from entering the school for the rest of the day. They further accuse the school management of showing bias against him due to his admission under the RTE quota.
Overwhelmed by the alleged mistreatment and physical abuse, the student returned home visibly shaken. His father works in a grocery store, while his mother is employed at a garment factory.
With no one at home, the boy reportedly shared his ordeal with his cousin sister before attempting to hang himself from a ceiling fan.
Noticing something was wrong, the cousin checked on him and found him in distress. She quickly intervened and alerted other family members.
The student was taken to a private hospital in Nayandahalli, where he is in critical condition. Medical professionals are treating him for severe injuries, including spinal cord damage.
The grieving parents are calling for immediate action from authorities and insist that those responsible be held accountable.
Law enforcement has opened a case and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further inquiries are being conducted to verify the claims of corporal punishment and discrimination against the school administration.
The school has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
