Bengaluru, Oct 23: The Bengaluru police have apprehended three individuals for allegedly hanging a stray dog from a tree and subsequently beating it to death with a heavy stick near Gunjur, adjacent to Greenwood High School, on October 20. This shocking act, which was reportedly recorded on video, has sparked widespread outrage on social media, raising serious concerns about animal cruelty, according to police reports released on Friday.
The suspects have been named as Muniyappa, Murali, and Puneeth, all of whom reside in Bengaluru. The police took action after an animal welfare activist lodged a complaint following the circulation of the disturbing video online.
As per the complaint, the accused allegedly subjected the stray dog to severe beating with a thick stick, leading to its death. The incident reportedly took place in front of the school, and CCTV footage is said to have captured the entire sequence of events.
The complainant urged law enforcement to pursue strict legal measures against those responsible for this brutal act, emphasizing the public's distress over the incident.
In response to the complaint, the police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the three individuals under Section 11(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The suspects have been detained for questioning, and an investigation is currently ongoing.
Additionally, the Bengaluru Police Commissionerate released a statement asserting that acts of animal cruelty will not be tolerated. They confirmed that a case has been registered regarding the death of the stray dog near Greenwood High School in Gunjur, Varthur.
“The Bengaluru City Police has acknowledged the incident, and appropriate legal actions have been initiated,” the statement read.
The police reiterated their dedication to ensuring justice and preventing cruelty towards innocent animals.
It is worth noting that a similar case occurred in February 2022, when a 23-year-old man was arrested for running over stray dogs with his luxury vehicle in Jayanagar. The individual, identified as Adi Narayana, is the grandson of the late D.K. Adikesavulu Naidu, a former MP and ex-chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Trust.
On January 26, 2022, Adi allegedly drove his luxury car onto the footpath where stray dogs were resting peacefully on 10th ‘B’ Main Road in Jayanagar 1st Block.
Animal rights activists alerted the police about this horrific incident, prompting a complaint from a former Corporator on January 29, 2022.
After reviewing the CCTV footage, the police arrested Adi and charged him under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Section 428 of the IPC for causing harm to animals.
