Bengaluru Hosts 'Run for Rajiv 2026' to Honor Rajiv Gandhi's Legacy
Celebrating Rajiv Gandhi's Birth Anniversary
On Sunday, Karnataka Congress leaders, including KPCC President BK Hariprasad, State Minister Rizwan Arshad, and Congress Seva Dal chief organizer BV Srinivas, launched the second edition of the 'Run for Rajiv 2026' 5K Run in Bengaluru. This event was organized to honor the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, attracting thousands of enthusiastic young participants ahead of the celebration on August 20.
Reflections on Rajiv Gandhi's Impact
In a statement to the media, BK Hariprasad emphasized Rajiv Gandhi's enduring legacy as a youth icon, attributing his vision to Bengaluru's rise as a prominent technology hub. He remarked, "Rajiv Gandhi is forever remembered in this country. He was a youth icon back in the '80s, and his vision has transformed Bangalore into the world's second-largest Silicon city. The youth are eager to commemorate him through this run."
Promoting Community and Fitness
Minister Rizwan Arshad highlighted the event as a significant opportunity for young individuals to engage in fitness activities. He noted, "Thousands of youth from Bengaluru and beyond participated in this 5K run. The city is gradually becoming the marathon capital, with numerous marathons being organized, and the youth are excited to take part."
He also pointed out the importance of fostering community connections, stating, "We need platforms that unite people. This initiative aims to build community ties amidst the prevailing negativity in society."
Connecting Youth with Rajiv Gandhi's Vision
BV Srinivas explained that the 'Rajiv Run' was designed to introduce younger generations to Rajiv Gandhi's principles and legacy. He described Gandhi as a visionary leader instrumental in India's computer revolution and noted his contributions to voting rights for 18-year-olds and women's reservations in Panchayat elections.
Srinivas added, "We are organizing similar service-oriented events nationwide to connect the new generation with Rajiv Gandhi's ideals. Although the main event is on Sunday, we held it a few days earlier to kickstart this initiative across the country."
A Glimpse into Rajiv Gandhi's Life
Rajiv Gandhi became the Congress leader in 1984 after the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi, and took office as India's youngest Prime Minister at the age of 40 in October 1984.
Born on August 20, 1944, in Bombay, he was only three years old when India gained independence, and his grandfather served as Prime Minister. He held the Prime Ministerial position until December 2, 1989.
Tragically, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991.
During his tenure, he introduced the National Youth Policy in 1988, aimed at the development of education and employment for youth aged 15 to 35, and initiated the Rajiv Gandhi Adventure Scheme to promote adventure activities among students. Additionally, he announced the National Policy on Education in 1986.
