Ben Stokes Discusses Shoaib Bashir's Omission for Second Ashes Test
England's Captain Comments on Team Changes
Ben Stokes, the captain of the England cricket team, has addressed the decision to exclude off-spinner Shoaib Bashir from the upcoming second Ashes Test against Australia, which is set to commence on December 4 in Brisbane. This match will be a day-night fixture held at the Gabba.
In preparation for the Brisbane Test, England has made one alteration to their lineup following their defeat in Perth. Fast bowler Mark Wood has been sidelined due to an injury, leading to all-rounder Will Jacks stepping in as his replacement.
Stokes Explains Tactical Choices
During a press conference prior to the match, Stokes clarified that the choice to include Jacks over Bashir was a 'tactical' one, particularly for a pink-ball Test. Bashir, along with teammate Jacob Bethell, has been released from the squad to compete for England Lions against Australia A in a four-day match starting Friday. Stokes remarked, 'We considered how spin would be utilized, and there was a tactical aspect to our decision.'
He further emphasized that Bashir remains England's top spinner, stating, 'Jacksy's batting skills provide us with depth in the order. However, if we were to select our best spinner, the choice would differ.'
Bashir's Recent Performance and Injury
Bashir has not participated in a First-Class match since England's second Test against India at home in July, where he sustained a finger injury while attempting a catch. He was ruled out for the series following this incident. Although he was included in the 12-man squad for the Ashes opener, he was ultimately omitted in favor of an all-pace bowling attack after a costly performance in England's internal warm-up match in Perth.
Current Series Status
As it stands, Australia leads the five-match Test series 1-0, having secured victory in the opening Test in Perth by eight wickets. Star batsman Travis Head played a crucial role, scoring 123 runs to help Australia successfully chase a target of 205 runs.
England's Lineup for the Second Ashes Test
The England XI for the second Ashes Test includes: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, and Jofra Archer.
