Beloved Assamese Singer Gayatri Hazarika Dies at 44 After Cancer Battle
Tragic Loss of a Musical Icon
Prominent Assamese vocalist Gayatri Hazarika passed away on Friday at the age of 44 at Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati, following a long struggle with colon cancer.
Dr. Hitesh Baruah, the Managing Director of Nemcare Hospitals, confirmed her death to a local media outlet, expressing profound sorrow: “It’s a very sad day for all of us. We have lost Gayatri Hazarika. She passed away at our hospital at 2:15 pm today. She was suffering from cancer and was undergoing treatment at our hospital. She was admitted three days ago after her condition deteriorated and had to be admitted to the ICU yesterday where she breathed her last.”
Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared his condolences on X (formerly Twitter) through the official CMO Assam account.
“Her soulful voice and enduring contributions to Assamese music will always be remembered. HCM prayed for her eternal peace and extended heartfelt condolences to her bereaved family.”

Atul Bora, the President of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), along with filmmaker and actress Aimee Baruah, also paid their respects.
Gayatri gained recognition with her hit song “Xora Pate Pate Phagun Naame.” Her voice, celebrated for its sweetness and emotional resonance, brought life to many tracks, including “Tumi Kun Birohi Ananya,” “Jank Nasil Bonot,” and “Xeuji Xopon.” She was highly regarded for her contributions to Assamese music, both as a playback singer and a live performer.
