Pochettino Acknowledges Belgium's Dominance

Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach of the United States, refuted claims that the Folarin Balogun controversy influenced his team's performance. He stated that Belgium rightfully earned their victory, eliminating the USA from the FIFA World Cup 2026, as reported by a sports outlet.

During the post-match press conference after the USA's 4-1 loss in the Round of 16, Pochettino emphasized that his team should not seek excuses. He admitted that Belgium outperformed them, saying, "It's tough to comment. We simply weren't good enough today; there's no need to find excuses. It wasn't a factor that impacted us in the group stage. Every team can have an off day, and today was ours. Belgium was superior. That's clear."

Controversy Surrounding Balogun's Eligibility

FIFA had previously rejected Belgium's appeal regarding Folarin Balogun's eligibility. The governing body of world football lifted the one-match suspension for the United States forward just before the Round of 16 match against Belgium. Balogun received a red card during the 64th minute of the USA's 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32.

Belgium Advances to Quarter-Finals

In the match, Belgium secured a place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a decisive 4-1 win over the USA at Seattle Stadium. Charles De Ketelaere shone with two goals, earning the Player of the Match title, while Hans Vanaken netted his first-ever goal in the FIFA World Cup. Additionally, substitute Romelu Lukaku scored in stoppage time, marking his third consecutive World Cup match with a goal.

Despite a brief equalizer from Malik Tillman via a deflected free-kick, Belgium maintained control throughout the game. A significant goalkeeping mistake by Matt Freese allowed Belgium to extend their lead before Lukaku finalized the scoreline late in the match.

This defeat concluded the United States' journey in the tournament, making them the last of the three co-host nations to exit, following Canada and Mexico. Belgium is set to face Spain in the quarter-finals on July 10, after Spain eliminated Portugal in the Round of 16.
