Belgium Advances to FIFA World Cup 2026 Quarter-Finals with 4-1 Win Over USA
Garcia Defends Balogun Amid Controversy
Rudi Garcia, the head coach of Belgium, came to the defense of U.S. player Folarin Balogun during the ongoing debate about his eligibility for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match. Following Belgium's impressive 4-1 win against the United States, Garcia emphasized that Balogun should not be held accountable for the circumstances surrounding his situation.
After the match, Garcia revealed that Balogun had a personal conversation with him, clarifying that the controversy did not impact Belgium's preparation or performance. He expressed gratitude to the Belgian fans who stayed up late to support the team, highlighting that their performance showcased Belgium's reputation in football.
Acknowledging Team Effort
"It's currently 4 AM in Belgium. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who woke up in the middle of the night to cheer for us. They should feel proud of their players today. We demonstrated that Belgium is a formidable football nation. The players executed the game plan flawlessly and maintained control throughout the match. It was truly a team effort," Garcia stated.
However, he noted that the injury to Amadou Onana cast a shadow over the celebrations. "The only significant disappointment tonight is Onana's injury. We owed it to him to push through the second half, secure the win, and advance to the quarter-finals," he added.
Balogun's Situation Clarified
Garcia also addressed the situation regarding Balogun, whose one-match suspension was lifted by FIFA just before the knockout game. He mentioned that Balogun approached him after the match, emphasizing that the player should not be blamed for the controversy.
"Balogun came to speak with me, which I appreciated. It's not his fault, and he shouldn't be held responsible. I made sure to convey that to him," Garcia remarked.
He downplayed the notion that the Balogun issue served as additional motivation for his players, asserting that Belgium's focus remained on their tactical strategy. "We didn't need any extra motivation. What mattered most was our game plan. We aimed to assert ourselves; the U.S. team is energetic and dynamic. We managed to score without needing Kevin (De Bruyne)," he explained.
Belgium's Dominant Performance
Belgium secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a decisive 4-1 victory over the United States at Seattle Stadium. Charles De Ketelaere shone with two goals, earning the Player of the Match title, while Hans Vanaken netted his first-ever World Cup goal, and substitute Romelu Lukaku added a late goal, marking his third consecutive World Cup match with a score.
Despite a brief equalizer from the USA through Malik Tillman's deflected free-kick, Belgium maintained dominance throughout the match. A significant goalkeeping error by Matt Freese allowed Belgium to extend their lead before Lukaku finalized the emphatic victory.
This defeat marked the end of the United States' journey in the tournament, making them the last of the three co-host nations to exit, following Canada and Mexico. Belgium is set to face Spain in the quarter-finals on July 10, after Spain eliminated Portugal in the Round of 16.
