Beau Webster Aims to Secure Spot in Australia's Test Lineup Against Bangladesh
Webster Eager to Establish His Place
Australian all-rounder Beau Webster is determined to demonstrate his worthiness for the playing XI ahead of the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin. He believes that his performances since his debut have proven he can be a reliable number six batter, and his partnership with Cameron Green would enhance the team's overall skill set.
Webster made his Test debut last year during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India. At 32, he has already faced numerous challenges and successes in his eight Test appearances, striving to secure his position in the squad for the World Test Championship leaders. Across eight Tests and 13 innings, he has accumulated 452 runs at an average of 41.09, including five half-centuries, and has taken 11 wickets at an average of approximately 24, showcasing his versatility in both medium pace and spin bowling.
He was the top scorer for Australia in the first innings during their defeat to South Africa in last year's World Test Championship Final at Lord's. Following that, he had a commendable performance in the Caribbean, contributing 150 runs in six innings with two fifties. However, he found himself sidelined during the Ashes series against England in late 2025, as selectors opted for players like Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, and Usman Khawaja. Webster did make a comeback for the final match of the series in Sydney, where he scored an unbeaten 71 and took three wickets, boosting his confidence ahead of a challenging Test schedule that includes two matches against Bangladesh this month, followed by tough contests against South Africa, New Zealand, and India.
Confidence in His Abilities
"The most significant lesson I've learned since my debut is that I am capable at this level," Webster stated on Tuesday, as reported by ICC. "Before my first Test, I often questioned my readiness. Although I confidently claimed I was prepared, the reality is you only truly know once you face international bowlers in high-pressure situations with large crowds. That realization has been crucial over the past year."
"I earned my place in this team through consistent run-scoring. As a batter, runs are my currency, and that has been my pathway into the team and a means to maintain my position. My performances in my first eight Tests have likely shown that I can be regarded as a legitimate top-six batter," he added.
Coexisting with Cameron Green
The exact position Webster will occupy in Australia's formidable batting lineup remains uncertain, as selectors have a wealth of talent to choose from for the final XI against Bangladesh. With 13 players in the squad for the two-match series, Webster believes there is no reason why both he and fellow all-rounder Green cannot play together.
"I don't see why it wouldn't work," Webster remarked. "Having more options in the top seven is undoubtedly advantageous, and I don't view it as a direct competition. It simply provides more options and benefits for the captain if both of us are performing well with the bat, along with our primary skills and contributions in the field."
"I enjoy playing alongside Cameron. It’s great to have the flexibility if he or I are bowling well, allowing us to alternate if the main bowlers need a break. I'm focused on doing my job and making it difficult for selectors to leave me out of the XI, whether with bat or ball. I take pride in contributing across all aspects of the game, and so does he. We are both all-rounders who primarily bat," he concluded.
