Tragic Incident in Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary

Nuapada: A bear attack on Saturday left two young men with severe injuries inside the Sunabeda wildlife sanctuary, located near Soseing village in the Komna police jurisdiction of Nuapada district.

The injured individuals have been identified as 37-year-old Dipachan Majhi and 28-year-old Amul Majhi, both from Soseing village.

Reports indicate that the pair ventured into the nearby Dalampala forest early in the morning to gather firewood.

While they were collecting wood, a wild bear with her cubs was foraging in the vicinity. Upon noticing the men, the bear unexpectedly charged at them.

Amul was the first to be attacked, suffering multiple injuries. When Dipachan attempted to help him, the bear redirected its aggression towards him, inflicting severe wounds to his face and body.

In the midst of the chaos, Amul managed to escape to a nearby forest guard outpost, where he alerted a caretaker who then notified the villagers.

More than ten villagers rushed to the scene to assist the injured men. However, as they approached, the bear pursued them, forcing everyone to climb trees for safety.

The bear remained in the area, fiercely protecting her cubs and pacing back and forth.

The rescuers stayed in the trees for nearly four hours until the bear finally moved away with her cubs.

Two villagers took an alternate route to retrieve the injured men and transported them to the Sunabeda Primary Health Centre.

Due to the severity of their injuries, they were later transferred to the Nuapada District Headquarters Hospital.

Amul sustained deep lacerations across his body, while Dipachan's facial injuries were so severe that his features became unrecognizable.
