No Blame Game Over Player Injuries

VVS Laxman, the head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE), addressed the media on Sunday regarding the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan from India's Test squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. He emphasized that there is no point in assigning blame for their injuries, as the focus should be on the collaborative efforts among the CoE, team management, support staff, and selection committee.

"We prefer not to use the term 'blame' because it implies finding a scapegoat. There is excellent coordination among the CoE, team management, and the selection committee," Laxman stated during a press conference in Bengaluru.

Understanding the 'Subject to Fitness' Selection Process

Laxman elaborated on the selection process, particularly concerning Bumrah and Sudharsan. He explained that when a fitness report is requested, the selectors reach out to the CoE for the latest updates. The report is then shared with the selection committee chairperson and the head coach. Both players were initially selected with an asterisk, indicating their participation was contingent on passing fitness tests.

"The asterisk signifies that their selection is subject to fitness clearance. If their recovery is slow, we communicate this to the selection committee and the head coach, ensuring they are aware that the players may not be ready for the international series," he added.

Why Injured Players Are Included in Initial Selections

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia explained the rationale behind including injured players in the squad. Selections occur weeks before the team departs, and a player's fitness can fluctuate during that time. "We hold selection meetings three to four weeks prior to departure, and we cannot predict a player's exact fitness status at that moment. The asterisk indicates that the player is undergoing rehabilitation, and if they recover in time, they can still be included in the team," Saikia noted.

Injury Concerns for Indian Players

Bumrah and Sudharsan are not the only players facing fitness issues ahead of the two-Test series. Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Washington Sundar are also sidelined due to injuries. Rana is recovering from a Grade 1 biceps femoris strain, while Reddy is dealing with a left quadriceps injury. Sundar will miss the first Test due to a hamstring issue.

Additionally, there are concerns regarding captain Shubman Gill, who injured his right finger during practice but has not yet been ruled out. The series against Sri Lanka is set to commence in Galle on August 15.
