On Wednesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the schedule for the 2026-27 Indian Domestic Season, which will encompass a total of 1,788 matches across various age groups and formats for both men's and women's cricket.

Diverse Tournaments Across Age Groups

The season will include competitions for senior, U23, U19, and U16 categories in men's cricket, alongside a comprehensive calendar for senior, U23, U19, and U15 women's tournaments, as stated in a BCCI press release.

Kickoff with the Duleep Trophy

The domestic season is set to kick off with the esteemed Duleep Trophy on August 23, 2026, heralding the start of a rigorous and competitive schedule aimed at enhancing the quality of domestic cricket in India.

Commitment to Domestic Cricket Development

The 2026-27 season underscores the BCCI's dedication to fostering a robust domestic framework while ensuring a balanced development across various formats and categories.

Emphasis on Red-Ball Cricket

The red-ball segment will commence with the Duleep Trophy, featuring six zonal teams, followed by the Irani Cup starting October 1. The Ranji Trophy and the Col CK Nayudu Trophy will be conducted in a two-phase format, allowing players sufficient recovery time while emphasizing multi-day cricket. The Ranji Trophy Elite Group will consist of 32 teams divided into four groups, while the Plate Group will include six teams.

Modernization of Tournaments

This season will also see the return of the Col CK Nayudu Trophy Winners vs Rest of India match, scheduled for October 1-4, 2026, aimed at providing a competitive platform for emerging U23 players.

In line with the BCCI's efforts to modernize domestic cricket, the Men's U23 State A Trophy and the Vizzy Trophy will transition from one-day formats to T20 competitions.

Logistical Improvements

In a notable change, the knockout rounds of the Cooch Behar Trophy (Elite Group) will take place in Bengaluru and Mysuru, promoting competitive balance among teams, especially during the January knockout phase when weather can be unpredictable.

Moreover, the Vijay Merchant Trophy (U16) has been rescheduled to run from November to January, enhancing player preparation and scheduling.
