The BCCI is preparing to announce a new captain for the T20 International team, with Shreyas Iyer likely to replace Suryakumar Yadav. Following a successful ICC T20 World Cup 2026, where India defended their title, Yadav's recent IPL performance raises questions about his future in the squad. As India gears up for upcoming matches against Ireland and England, Iyer's return is highly anticipated after a stellar IPL season. Other contenders for the captaincy include Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also in the mix. Stay tuned for the latest updates on this significant leadership transition.

BCCI Apex Committee Meeting Scheduled

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is poised to convene the Apex Committee on Thursday to reveal the new captain for the senior men's T20 International team, as reported by insiders.

Leadership Transition in T20I

Sources within the BCCI indicate that Suryakumar Yadav is likely to step down from his captaincy role, with Shreyas Iyer anticipated to take over as the new skipper for the T20 format. Despite leading India to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, where they successfully defended their title and became the first team to win the trophy on home soil, Yadav's performance in the IPL 2026 season, where he scored only 270 runs, may jeopardize his position in the squad.

Upcoming Matches and Iyer's Comeback

India is scheduled to face Ireland in two T20Is and will play five T20Is against England starting June 26. Shreyas Iyer, who last participated in an international T20I against Australia in December 2023, is set to return to the national team following an impressive IPL 2026 season with Punjab Kings, where he amassed 498 runs.

Potential Candidates for Captaincy

In addition to Iyer, other players in contention for the captaincy include explosive opener Ishan Kishan and middle-order batsman Tilak Varma. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who concluded the IPL 2026 season with the Orange Cap for scoring 776 runs, is also a strong candidate for a spot in the team.
