BCCI Reviews Player Workload and Strategies for Future Tours
BCCI Holds Review Meeting on Player Performance
On Thursday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) convened a review meeting to evaluate the team's recent challenges during overseas tours. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized the need to address concerns regarding player workload and injuries. The board has developed a strategy aimed at future tours to SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) and plans to revise the Future Tours Programme (FTP) to ensure players receive sufficient rest and acclimatization.
Key Figures in Attendance
The meeting, held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, included notable figures such as India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and VVS Laxman, head of the Centre of Excellence (CoE). The backdrop of the meeting was India's disappointing performance in recent overseas matches, including a 2-0 T20I series loss to Ireland and a 4-0 defeat against England in T20Is, along with a 2-1 loss in the ODI series.
Acknowledgment of Poor Performance
Saikia acknowledged the need for introspection regarding the team's performance in Ireland and England. He stated, "We did not perform well. We lost matches in both Ireland and England, and we need to understand the reasons behind these losses. We are committed to developing a strategy for future tours to SENA countries."
Concerns Over Player Fitness and Workload
The discussion also focused on player fitness and the increasing workload on athletes. Saikia pointed out that the demanding schedule, particularly the two-month IPL before the England tour, could lead to injuries. Key players like Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Harshit Rana have been included in the squad for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan, pending fitness assessments.
Injury Updates on Key Players
Bumrah's last international appearance was on July 16 against England, after which he was ruled out of the final ODI due to an injury sustained while fielding. Additionally, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is working on his recovery from injuries that have kept him sidelined since the IPL 2026 season.
Managing Player Workload
Saikia expressed concerns about the packed schedule leading to injuries among players. He noted that the high volume of matches, especially following the IPL, takes a toll on player health. The BCCI is exploring ways to manage player workload effectively within the current FTP framework.
Focus on Team Policies Rather Than Individual Players
Saikia clarified that the review meeting was not focused on any individual player but rather on establishing broader fitness policies and protocols. He emphasized the importance of feedback from team captains and the head coach in formulating strategies to prevent future issues.
Restructuring the Future Tours Programme
To combat player fatigue, the BCCI plans to restructure the FTP to prioritize adequate rest and acclimatization before major series in SENA countries. Saikia stated, "We are coordinating well across all divisions of the BCCI, but the challenge remains the high number of matches scheduled each year."
Absence of Selection Committee Chairman
Saikia mentioned that Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the BCCI Selection Committee, was unable to attend the meeting due to being out of town.
Upcoming Assignments for India
India's upcoming schedule includes the 2026 Asian Games men's campaign, a T20I series against Afghanistan, and a series against West Indies. Following these, the team will face New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe in various formats, culminating in a five-Test series against Australia.
Ensuring Facilities for Asian Games
Saikia assured that the BCCI would take necessary measures to provide the best facilities for players and support staff during the Asian Games in Japan. He noted that while this topic was not discussed in the meeting, the board is prepared to address any issues that may arise.
Concerns Over Facilities at Asian Games
Saikia's comments come amid reports that Team India might send a 'B' team to the Asian Games due to dissatisfaction with the facilities in Japan. The Asian Games are set to commence on September 19 in Aichi-Nagoya.
