BCCI Implements Stricter Security Measures for IPL Amid Rising Concerns
BCCI's New Guidelines for IPL Security
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is poised to enforce more stringent disciplinary and access-control protocols during the current Indian Premier League (IPL) season. This decision follows a series of incidents that have raised alarms regarding security and breaches of anti-corruption measures. A BCCI insider stated, "We are compelled to introduce guidelines this IPL season due to numerous incidents that have made the board uneasy. Discussions are ongoing with IPL franchises to prevent any further issues. There has been significant indiscipline this season."
BCCI Officials Address Security Issues
This announcement comes shortly after BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla revealed that the board is developing new rules to manage player access and limit unauthorized interactions in secure areas such as hotels and team buses. During a recent address in Lucknow, Shukla emphasized that these measures aim to enhance transparency and reinforce the integrity of the league. He stated, "Player access will be regulated; unauthorized individuals will not be permitted to meet players in hotels or on buses to maintain IPL transparency."
Concerns Over Player Interactions
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also voiced his worries regarding what he described as "anomalies and irregularities" involving players, franchise officials, and outsiders during the tournament. Saikia noted that the board has observed several cases of unauthorized individuals accompanying team members, entering team hotels, and even accessing players' and officials' rooms, which directly contravenes the IPL's anti-corruption protocols. He further mentioned that certain franchise owners and officials were seen interacting with players in restricted areas where such meetings are not allowed under tournament rules.
Disciplinary Actions Taken This Season
The current IPL season has already seen disciplinary measures taken in various instances. Riyan Parag, the captain of Rajasthan Royals, faced a fine of 25% of his match fee and received a demerit point for vaping in the dressing room during a match against Punjab Kings. Additionally, Rajasthan Royals manager Ravinder Singh Bhinder was fined ₹1 lakh for using a mobile phone near the dugout during a game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Guwahati.
