BCCI Considers Leadership Changes Ahead of England Test Series

Potential Shift in Test Captaincy
Recent reports indicate that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating a change in leadership, particularly regarding Shubman Gill's role as the new Test captain. Sources suggest that a last-minute alteration in captaincy remains a possibility.
On Thursday, May 15, Gautam Gambhir is scheduled to visit Mumbai for a crucial meeting, where the primary agenda will likely revolve around finalizing the captaincy for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, commencing on June 20.
In the past few days, numerous media outlets have pointed to Shubman Gill as the frontrunner for the captaincy. Reports suggest that the young batsman is ready to assume leadership responsibilities.
Gill has reportedly engaged in discussions with the team management about his future role, and both the BCCI and coaching staff appear to support his candidacy for captain.
However, the emergence of reports regarding a potential change has reignited discussions around other candidates, including Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul. Despite backing Gill, these players remain in contention for the captaincy.
Following Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket, Bumrah was seen as a natural successor due to his vice-captaincy. Nevertheless, the team's management is cautious about overburdening him, especially given his history of injuries as the leading pace bowler.
Rishabh Pant is also a strong candidate, having been a key player in India's Test lineup for several years and currently serving as vice-captain. His recent form positions him as an ideal choice for leadership.
In contrast, KL Rahul is not favored for the captaincy due to his age and less-than-stellar Test performance, with a modest average of under 35 across 50 matches, leading selectors to question his suitability for the role.
The BCCI is anticipated to announce the new Test captain during a special press conference next week, coinciding with the announcement of the squad for the England series, marking the beginning of a new ICC World Test Championship cycle.
