BBA Student Shares Insights from Gig Economy Experience with Rapido

Student's Journey in the Gig Economy

A BBA student from Bengaluru took on the role of a Rapido Captain during his college break, working for nearly three months and earning around ₹65,000. He shared his experience on social media, emphasizing that his goal was not solely to earn money but also to gain a deeper understanding of how the gig economy and platform-based jobs function.

According to the student, he typically worked from 8 AM to 4:30 PM. On good days, he could earn up to ₹1,200 before accounting for fuel and other expenses. When ride requests were low, he supplemented his income by delivering food.

Throughout this period, he not only gained financial experience but also encountered various challenges associated with gig work. He noted that despite long hours, he often spent significant time waiting for ride requests. Additionally, factors such as fuel costs, platform regulations, customer issues, and income unpredictability were integral to his work.

Reflecting on his experience, he stated that while it served as a beneficial side job for him, it also prompted him to consider those who rely entirely on gig work for their daily needs. He felt that these three months provided him with valuable insights into the gig economy from a worker's perspective.

He also shared a breakdown of his earnings over the months. Reports indicate that in May, he completed 96 orders earning approximately ₹5,650, followed by around ₹16,660 in June, and in July, he completed 233 orders for about ₹14,222. His total earnings included various periods and payments.

After the student's post gained traction, social media users responded positively, praising his willingness to share his experiences. Many noted that such insights help illuminate the everyday challenges faced by gig workers.
