Batting Coach Advocates for Patience with Young Star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

In a recent press conference, India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak emphasized the need for patience regarding 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's inclusion in the playing XI. While acknowledging the young cricketer's talent, Kotak stressed that the hype surrounding him could be detrimental to his development. Sooryavanshi may get a chance to play in the upcoming T20I against New Zealand due to an injury to Ishan Kishan. Kotak also praised the emergence of Naman Dhir, who played a crucial role in India's victory in the first T20I. As the team prepares for the next match, the focus remains on nurturing young talent while maintaining team performance.

Batting Coach Urges Patience for Teen Talent

Sitanshu Kotak, India's batting coach, has expressed concerns regarding the excessive attention surrounding 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He believes that the calls for the young left-handed batter's inclusion in the playing XI may not be beneficial for either the player or the team. During a pre-match press conference before the second T20I against New Zealand, Kotak emphasized that while Sooryavanshi has the support of the team management, selections should not be influenced by popularity.

"Initially, there was significant hype suggesting he must play. I felt this pressure was detrimental to him. At just 15-16 years old, the constant chatter about his selection isn't healthy. It's unfortunate for him and the other openers who are performing well but are questioned about their place in the team," Kotak remarked, as reported by Cricinfo.

Potential Opportunity and Development

Sooryavanshi may have a chance to showcase his skills in the upcoming second T20I, especially after wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan was sidelined due to a low-grade right adductor strain sustained in the series opener. The teenager made his T20I debut in early July after an impressive Player-of-the-Tournament performance in IPL 2026, yet he has only participated in seven of India's 19 matches since then. The team has generally favored Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Kishan in the top order.

Kotak noted that Sooryavanshi has shown maturity in understanding the performances of his teammates while waiting for his opportunity. "He is now much more mature and recognizes that Sanju and Abhishek are performing well, making it hard to leave them out. The middle order is also competitive. Everyone understands this, but naturally, he wants to play. If I were in his position, I would feel the same. However, he is a grounded individual who hasn't complained or appeared disheartened. The experience of waiting will ultimately benefit him greatly."

Coaching Focus and Natural Ability

Kotak highlighted the immense potential of Sooryavanshi, stating that the team management is dedicated to helping him grow without altering his natural batting style. "He is quite young, but the way the team management supports him is commendable. He is well-liked by everyone, including on social media. However, we cannot make team changes solely based on popularity," Kotak explained, according to Cricinfo.

"He possesses remarkable talent, and I am confident he has a bright future ahead. Once he gets his chances and finds his footing, he will learn a great deal. My discussions with him have revolved around reading deliveries and knowing when to play specific shots while maintaining his aggressive instincts. I won't interfere with his intent unless absolutely necessary. He has the ability to dominate bowlers, and if I see room for improvement on certain deliveries, we will address it. He is an extraordinary talent," he added.

Emergence of Naman Dhir

In addition to Sooryavanshi's potential, Kotak expressed enthusiasm about Naman Dhir's recent performance, where he scored an unbeaten 42 off just 15 balls, leading India to a four-wicket victory in the first T20I against New Zealand. Dhir's late-game heroics helped India chase down 226 runs with two balls remaining, giving them a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. He also contributed an unbeaten 24 off six balls in the final T20I against the West Indies on October 17.

"We are aware of his capabilities, including his bowling potential in first-class cricket and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His role in the last match was crucial, and he executed it excellently, which is a positive sign," Kotak noted.

Kotak also praised Dhir's versatility, highlighting his fielding skills, bowling options, and ability to finish games. "In T20 matches, if there are many left-handed batters, an offspinner can bowl several overs, depending on the situation. He is a strong fielder and can significantly impact the game as a finisher. While it's early to make predictions, I find him to be a very promising talent with a solid batting technique and impressive power," he concluded.

Looking Ahead

As India prepares for the second T20I, they aim to extend their series lead, while New Zealand seeks to recover after narrowly missing victory in the opener despite scoring 225/4. The first match showcased New Zealand's ability to challenge India on home turf, with the hosts recovering after a strong start from the visitors. Dew conditions are expected to play a significant role, making the toss and the decision to chase crucial in Christchurch.
