Bangladesh's New PM Aims for Strong Ties with India for Economic Growth
Bangladesh's Diplomatic Shift Under New Leadership
Guwahati, Feb 25: Former Assam Police Chief BJ Mahanta has stated that Bangladesh's Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is likely to foster positive relations with India, which is crucial for his country's economic progress. Following his recent appointment, Rahman has already begun to exhibit signs of this diplomatic approach.
In an interview, Mahanta pointed out that while the interim leader of Bangladesh, Md. Yunus, has tried to minimize India's involvement in the 1971 Liberation War, Rahman's recent actions indicate a different direction.
Rahman's visit to the war memorial and his decision to appoint a Minister dedicated to liberation history demonstrate his commitment to acknowledging India's significant contributions.
Mahanta also mentioned that while Rahman is expected to be firm against anti-India non-state actors, tensions between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami may arise. He stressed that Rahman's emphasis on economic development will require robust relationships with neighboring countries, particularly India.
Having developed his views during his time in exile in Britain and influenced by his daughter's international outlook, Rahman recognizes the importance of modern diplomacy for national development.
Although he may seek defense partnerships with China and Pakistan, potentially allowing the ISI to promote an anti-India narrative, Mahanta believes that Rahman will ultimately prioritize a stable and constructive relationship with India to ensure Bangladesh's economic stability.
