Bangladesh to Decide on IPL Broadcast Ban After Minister's Return
Decision Pending on IPL Broadcast in Bangladesh
On Saturday, Aminul Haque, the Sports Minister of Bangladesh, announced that a decision regarding the potential lifting of the Indian Premier League (IPL) broadcast ban will be made once the Information Minister, Zahiruddin Swapan, returns from his overseas trip. Swapan is expected back in Bangladesh on March 30.
"We will consult with the Information Minister upon his return to discuss the IPL broadcast ban. He is currently abroad, and we will gather more information before making a decision," Haque stated in a phone interview.
Additionally, the Sports Minister mentioned that the Information Ministry had reached out to the Ministry of Sports for their input on the matter.
Background of the IPL Broadcast Ban
The ban on IPL broadcasts in Bangladesh was implemented in response to the Kolkata Knight Riders' refusal to allow Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman to participate. On January 5, the interim government issued a directive to halt all live broadcasts of the IPL and related events until further notice.
Following the general elections on February 12, a new democratic government took office. The Ministry of Information subsequently contacted the Ministry of Sports to discuss the possibility of lifting the ban, but as of now, no feedback has been received from the Sports Ministry. A decision will be made once their opinion is provided.
Details on the Upcoming IPL Season
The IPL 2026 season is scheduled to commence on March 28, featuring the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), facing off against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Kolkata Knight Riders will kick off their season against the Mumbai Indians at the renowned Wankhede Stadium on March 29.
