Bangladesh Surges Past India in ICC World Test Championship Standings
Bangladesh's Historic Victory Over Pakistan
In a remarkable achievement, Bangladesh has ascended to fifth place in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings, overtaking India following a historic 78-run victory against Pakistan in the second Test of their two-match series held in Sylhet on Wednesday. Under the leadership of Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh now boasts a points percentage (PCT) of 58.330, while India has dropped to sixth with a PCT of 48.150, according to the ICC's official website.
Pakistan, on the other hand, remains in eighth place with a PCT of 8.330 after this defeat. Australia leads the WTC standings with an impressive PCT of 87.500, having secured seven wins out of eight matches. This 2-0 series victory marks Bangladesh's first home Test series win against Pakistan and their second consecutive clean sweep against the Asian team, following a similar success in Pakistan in 2024.
Taijul's Spin Magic Secures Win
Facing a daunting target of 437 runs in the fourth innings, Pakistan showed resilience but ultimately fell short, being bowled out for 358. The standout performer for Bangladesh was left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, who played a pivotal role in dismantling the Pakistani batting order, finishing with impressive bowling figures of 6/120 in 34.2 overs.
Innings Breakdown
Pakistan opted to bowl first and allowed Bangladesh to score 278 runs in their first innings, highlighted by a remarkable counter-attacking 126 from wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das. In reply, Pakistan struggled, getting all out for 232, despite a brisk 68 runs from Babar Azam. Bangladesh's Nahid Rana and Taijul Islam each took three wickets, giving their team a crucial 46-run lead after the first innings.
In their second innings, Bangladesh dominated, amassing 390 runs. Veteran player Mushfiqur Rahim anchored the innings with a stellar 137 off 233 balls, while Litton Das contributed a solid 69, setting Pakistan a formidable target of 437 runs.
Pakistan's chase featured a determined 92-run partnership for the sixth wicket between captain Shan Masood (71) and Babar Azam (47), followed by a 134-run stand between Agha and Mohammad Rizwan (94). Despite this resistance, Taijul Islam's spin proved too strong, as he took crucial wickets, including those of Azam and Masood, ultimately sealing the match with a six-wicket haul.
Significant Series Sweep
With this victory, following their 104-run win in the first Test at Dhaka, Bangladesh has achieved a historic consecutive Test series sweep against Pakistan, replicating their 2-0 series win over the same team back in 2024.
