Upcoming Season Details

The 2025-26 season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is scheduled to kick off on December 25. Despite facing numerous challenges and controversies leading up to its 12th edition, the tournament is grappling with serious concerns regarding its integrity, cricket quality, and issues surrounding player payments and logistics, as reported by a sports news outlet.

Corruption Investigation Looms

According to the same report, a comprehensive 900-page investigation into corruption from the previous BPL season was submitted to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) by an independent committee two months ago. This report continues to overshadow the tournament. Although the BCB has not revealed the names of implicated players, nine cricketers were notably excluded from the recent player auction. Some of these players expressed their frustration publicly, with one even considering legal action against the BCB. Their absence could have long-term repercussions on their careers. Despite the BCB's stance during the auction, some individuals flagged in the investigation were reportedly seen at franchise tables.

Financial Struggles and Payment Issues

Financial difficulties persist for many BPL franchises, with the Chattogram Royals withdrawing from the tournament, prompting the BCB to step in. Payment disputes are not a new issue; several players and coaches remain unpaid from previous seasons, including the 2024-25 season. Although the situation improved between 2016 and 2019, last season saw a resurgence of problems, exemplified by the Durbar Rajshahi players boycotting a match due to delayed payments, which required government intervention. This season, the ongoing economic challenges in Bangladesh further exacerbate these issues.

Franchise Changes and Player Withdrawals

Several players, such as Niroshan Dickwella, Abrar Ahmed, and Paul Stirling, have opted out either before or after the auction, affecting the quality of cricket and raising concerns about timely payments. This season sees the introduction of four new teams—Rajshahi Warriors, Sylhet Titans, Noakhali Express, and Chattogram Royals—resulting in a reduction of teams from seven to six. The Chattogram Royals have encountered early challenges, including withdrawals of overseas players, logistical issues, and difficulties in securing sponsorships, with links to individuals mentioned in the previous corruption investigation. Only the Rangpur Riders and Dhaka Capitals have maintained stability, with Rangpur retaining much of their setup, including coach Mickey Arthur, while Dhaka has revamped their squad, acquiring top overseas player Dasun Shanaka.

Emerging Local Talent in the Spotlight

With many top international players absent due to clashes with major T20 leagues and perceptions of instability, there are opportunities for uncapped local players to shine. Notable talents include Habibur Rahman Sohan, Abdul Gaffar Saqlain, SM Meherob, and Akbar Ali, who has experience leading domestically with Rangpur. These players have the potential to emerge as breakout stars this season.

BPL's Importance for T20 World Cup Preparation

As there are no international matches scheduled in the two months leading up to the T20 World Cup, Bangladesh's preparation will heavily depend on player performances in the BPL. Captain Litton Das has expressed confidence in the squad following recent series victories but hopes that key players remain injury-free during the tournament. Some prominent players, including Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, and Mustafizur Rahman, are participating in overseas T20 leagues. Consequently, the focus in the BPL will be on core batters such as Tanzid Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Saif Hassan, and Litton Das, whose form and fitness will be crucial indicators ahead of the World Cup.
