Bangladesh Police Arrest Six in Lynching Case of Hindu Man Amid Protests
Arrests Made in Lynching Incident
On Thursday, law enforcement in Bangladesh apprehended six additional individuals linked to the lynching of a Hindu man accused of blasphemy, according to reports from local media.
Dipu Chandra Das, a factory worker, was brutally killed by a mob in the Mymensingh district on December 18. Following the attack, his body was reportedly tied to a tree and set ablaze.
Mohammed Abdullah Al Mamun, the Additional Superintendent of Police in Mymensingh, stated that the arrested individuals allegedly incited factory workers with slogans and pressured Das to resign.
The suspects have been identified as Taqbir, Ruhul Amin, Noor Alam, Shamim Mia, Selim Mia, and Masum Khalasi.
Prior to this, twelve others had been detained in connection with the case, bringing the total number of arrests to eighteen.
Das's murder occurred amid significant unrest in Bangladesh, following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, who succumbed to gunshot wounds in a Singapore hospital on the same day.
Hadi was a notable figure in the 2024 student protests that led to the previous government's ousting, which was led by Sheikh Hasina of the Awami League.
The killing of Das has triggered protests across various regions in India, including Delhi, West Bengal, and Assam. On December 23, members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal clashed with police during a demonstration near the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi.
On Friday, these organizations organized a protest rally outside the Puri Jagannath temple.
