Dhaka, Oct 13: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman of Bangladesh has reiterated his government's dedication to safeguarding the rights and security of all citizens, irrespective of their religious affiliations.
During a meeting with leaders from the Hindu community at his office, as reported by the state-run BSS news agency, Rahman emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring that every citizen's rights are upheld, independent of their faith.
He stated, "It is my responsibility as the head of government to ensure that all citizens receive the rights they are entitled to, and I will exert every effort to achieve this goal."
Rahman's comments come at a time when there are growing concerns regarding the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh, particularly the Hindu population, and the protection of their places of worship and gatherings.
According to the 2022 census, Hindus represent approximately 8 percent (around 13 million) of Bangladesh's nearly 170 million inhabitants.
The Prime Minister's assurances are particularly significant as security measures are heightened nationwide in anticipation of Durga Puja, the largest religious festival for the Hindu minority in Bangladesh.
Authorities have implemented extensive security protocols, including round-the-clock monitoring, specialized police units, and aerial surveillance using drones and helicopters, at nearly 33,000 Durga Puja venues to ensure communal harmony during the celebrations from October 16 to 20.
In previous years, there have been incidents of violence against Hindu temples and establishments during religious events, raising alarms about the safety of minority groups and prompting demands for more robust protective measures.
Rahman expressed his view that his role is an opportunity to serve the populace and pledged to protect the rights of all citizens, regardless of their religious background.
