Bangladesh High Commissioner's Trip to Tripura

Agartala, August 1: M Riaz Hamidullah, the Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, has arrived in Agartala for a three-day official visit to Tripura, as confirmed by senior officials.

During his stay, Hamidullah is scheduled to engage in discussions with Tripura's Governor N Indrasena Reddy and Chief Minister Manik Saha.

According to official sources, the High Commissioner will also tour the Agartala Integrated Check Post (ICP) and the Akhaura Land Port located on the Bangladeshi side.

On Saturday, he plans to head to the Akhaura ICP to visit the Ashuganj port, traversing through Bangladeshi territory. Additionally, he is expected to inspect the Nischintapur railway station, which is part of the Agartala-Akhaura rail link.

A successful technical trial run was conducted in September 2023 on the newly built railway tracks connecting Gangasagar in Bangladesh to Nischintapur in Tripura. However, the project has faced delays due to a sudden political change in Bangladesh.

Furthermore, the Bangladesh envoy will visit Sabroom in South Tripura to evaluate the Maitri Setu, which links Sabroom with Ramgarh in Bangladesh.

This bridge was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in March 2021, but it has yet to become operational due to the political transition in Dhaka.
