Government Takes Action Following Attack on Historical Site

Guwahati, June 13: In response to the recent mob attack on the ancestral home of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore located in Sirajganj district, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh has released an official statement, promising that those responsible will face strict legal consequences.

The incident took place at Kachharibari, a historic residence in Shahzadpur, Rajshahi division, which served as the Tagore family's revenue office and was the birthplace of many of Tagore's literary works.

This attack has drawn widespread outrage in both Bangladesh and India. Following the incident on June 10, local authorities initiated a criminal case and arrested two suspects. Additionally, a district-level inquiry board has been established to investigate further.

In its statement, the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry highlighted the profound respect both the government and the public have for Rabindranath Tagore's significant contributions to the nation's cultural and linguistic heritage.

“Rabindranath Tagore is revered in Bangladesh as a vital part of our cultural identity. There is no room for actions that seek to create discord or tarnish his legacy,” the ministry stated on social media.

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also condemned the vandalism, labeling it as “despicable” and contrary to the values that Tagore championed. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her deep concern and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the matter with Bangladesh to ensure justice.

The vandalized site, recognized as a government-protected property, holds significant historical and cultural importance for both countries.
