Bakersfield Bank Hostage Situation Concludes After 15-Hour Standoff
Resolution of Hostage Crisis in Bakersfield
A tense hostage situation at a bank in Bakersfield, California, came to an end early Wednesday morning after lasting over 15 hours. Authorities confirmed that all hostages were freed without injury, while the suspect was found deceased at the scene. The incident wrapped up around 4:00 AM local time following a police shooting at the multi-story building, which houses a Chase bank branch and a school district office, located approximately 100 miles north of Los Angeles. Specifics regarding the suspect's death have not yet been disclosed. According to Bakersfield police, their officers did not engage in the use of force during the incident. "All hostages were located unharmed and received medical evaluation and treatment at the scene," the police stated.
The standoff began around 1 PM on Tuesday when a man barricaded himself inside the building with several community members. Crisis negotiators from both the Bakersfield Police Department and the FBI were dispatched after a bomb threat was reported in connection with the situation.
Witnesses reported that a large number of SWAT officers arrived in the area around 2:30 AM on Wednesday. Video footage captured officers escorting a group of approximately seven individuals from the building. Additionally, witnesses claimed to have seen a man, presumed to be the suspect, being taken out during the night. As a precaution, several nearby buildings were evacuated. A representative from JPMorgan Chase indicated that the bank's branch, located on the ground floor, was unoccupied at the time of the incident and that the company was cooperating with law enforcement. By Wednesday morning, the area remained secured with police tape, and residents were advised to steer clear. Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh emphasized, "The best way the public can help at this time is by avoiding the area and allowing law enforcement officers, negotiators, and other trained professionals the space and opportunity to safely carry out their duties."
