Bail Granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi in High-Profile Murder Case
Bail Decision in the Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case
Shillong, April 28: On Tuesday, the Sessions Court in Shillong approved bail for Sonam Raghuvanshi, the main suspect in the notorious murder case of Raja Raghuvanshi, almost a year after her judicial custody began.
Judicial Officer D. Kharbateng granted the bail, requiring Sonam to submit a bail bond of Rs 50,000.
The court has set stringent conditions for her release, mandating that she stays within the court's jurisdiction and regularly reports to the prosecuting officer. Additionally, she must attend all future hearings related to the case.
Sonam is accused of orchestrating the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Sohra in May 2025.
This case has garnered significant media attention due to its alleged conspiracy and the involvement of several suspects.
After the incident, Sonam and four others—Raj Kushwaha, who is thought to be her lover, Akash Rajput, Anand Kurmi, and Vishal Singh Chauhan—were arrested and placed in judicial custody in June of the previous year for their suspected involvement in the crime.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, the prosecution asserted that granting bail does not undermine their case.
Special Public Prosecutor KC Gautam emphasized that the trial will continue as planned and noted that the bail was primarily granted because the accused had already spent nearly a year in custody.
Previously, the Meghalaya Police submitted a detailed 790-page chargesheet on September 6 to the Judicial Magistrate First Class at Sohra, outlining the alleged conspiracy and the roles of the accused.
The charges include various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), such as Section 103(1) for murder, Section 238(a) for the destruction or concealment of evidence, and Section 61(2) for criminal conspiracy.
While Sonam's bail marks a significant development in the case, legal proceedings will persist, with the court set to review evidence and witness testimonies in upcoming hearings.
