Baan Theatre's Historic Conference


Tezpur, Dec 30: The recent biennial gathering of the renowned Baan Theatre concluded with several important resolutions, emphasizing the need to safeguard the Assamese language, literature, and culture from any potential threats. Additionally, there was a proposal to create a national theatre institute in Tezpur.


The conference celebrated Baan Theatre's rich 125-year history, commencing with the raising of the organization's flag accompanied by the performance of its theme song, Rangar Mancha Baan Theatre, Rupa Sagarar Tirtha. During the flag hoisting, Bankim Sarma, the president, honored the founders and underscored the theatre's vital role in enhancing Assam's cultural narrative.


Among the significant resolutions, the assembly agreed that Baan Theatre would remain vigilant against any threats to the Assamese language and culture, pledging to respond decisively to protect the interests of the Assamese people.


A proposal put forth by senior member and former Education Minister Brindaban Goswami for establishing a national theatre institute, termed Jatiya Naatsala, was thoroughly discussed and received unanimous approval.


The conference also decided to compile a collection of plays by the esteemed playwright Prafulla Bora and to form a committee aimed at amending the constitution of Baan Theatre, along with several other significant initiatives.


During the event, lifetime membership certificates were awarded to Bhupen Sarma, Dr. Jahanara Begum, Bikram Bora, Mukut Patangia, Bibek Saikia, and Kulen Bora, recognizing their 25 years of dedication to the institution and their reaching the age of 60.


Following elections held on Sunday, a new executive committee was established for the upcoming session, with Bankim Sarma continuing as president, alongside Bhabananda Das and Mrigen Chandra Bora as vice-presidents, and Jitumani Dev Choudhury as general secretary, among others.
