Azharuddin Urges Indian Team to Adapt Quickly to English Conditions
Azharuddin's Call for Adaptation
Mohammad Azharuddin, the former captain of India and current Telangana Minister, has urged the Indian cricket team to swiftly adjust to the unique conditions in England. This plea comes after the team faced their third consecutive defeat against England in the ongoing T20I series. In an interview following India's latest loss, Azharuddin emphasized that players must understand that international cricket in England requires a different mindset compared to franchise cricket.
"Playing in England is a completely different experience. It's not akin to the IPL. The sooner the Indian team comprehends this, the better it will be for them. In the IPL, players often aim to hit every ball for six. However, in England, the ball swings, the conditions vary, and the pitch offers bounce," Azharuddin stated.
"The English bowlers have effectively figured out how to bowl to each batsman. We need to put in significant effort. The performance has not been satisfactory, but I believe they will learn from this. With two losses against Ireland and three consecutive defeats here, the situation is concerning for the Indian team. I hope they can quickly learn and demonstrate some pride in the upcoming match," he added.
India's Series of Defeats
These comments followed India's fifth T20I loss during their tour of Ireland and England, despite entering the year as the reigning ICC Men's T20 World Cup champions, having secured the title with a 96-run victory over New Zealand earlier this year.
Series Lost Under New Leadership
Under the new captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, India has conceded the five-match series after a significant nine-wicket defeat in the fourth T20I at Bristol, giving England an unassailable 3-0 lead after the first match ended without a result.
Previously, the team lost the second T20I by four wickets and suffered a staggering 125-run defeat in the third match, where they were bowled out for a mere 76 while chasing a target of 202.
This defeat against England follows India's 2-0 series loss to Ireland earlier this year, marking the first bilateral T20I series defeat against the Irish. Both series losses occurred after the BCCI appointed Iyer as the T20I captain, replacing World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav.
Iyer's Solo Effort in Bristol
Despite Iyer's commendable effort, scoring an unbeaten 80 off 49 balls in Bristol, India could only manage 158/7. England successfully chased down the target in just 13.5 overs, led by captain Harry Brook's impressive 79 off 35 balls and Phil Salt's 59 off 42.
This result also marked England's first bilateral T20I series victory over India in a series consisting of two or more matches.
India will aim to redeem themselves in the final T20I on Saturday before shifting their focus to the ODI series against England.
