Highlights from the T20 World Cup Final: India vs New Zealand
India triumphed over New Zealand by 96 runs, successfully defending their T20 World Cup title. This victory marked India as the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil, the first to achieve back-to-back titles following their 2024 win, and the first to lift the trophy three times (2007, 2024, and 2026).
Key Performers in the Final
In the final match, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first. However, a stellar performance from Abhishek Sharma, who scored 52 runs off 21 balls, alongside a significant partnership with Sanju Samson, proved detrimental to New Zealand's strategy. Samson contributed to a century partnership with Ishan Kishan, who scored 54 runs off 25 balls, propelling India past the 200-run mark by the 16th over. Shivam Dube added valuable runs, finishing with 26 not out off just eight balls, leading India to a record total of 255/5, the highest in T20 World Cup finals. James Neesham was the standout bowler for New Zealand, taking 3 wickets for 46 runs.
Indian Bowlers Dominate New Zealand's Chase
In response to India's formidable total of 256 runs, Indian bowlers Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah dismantled the New Zealand batting lineup, reducing them to 72/5. Despite a half-century from Tim Seifert, who scored 52 runs off 26 balls, and a brief partnership between Daryl Mitchell and captain Mitchell Santner, India continued to take wickets consistently, ultimately bowling New Zealand out for just 159 runs.
