Azam Khan Faces Legal Setbacks

Ghaziabad. Senior leader of the Samajwadi Party and former minister Azam Khan has not received any relief in the alleged money laundering case linked to Johar University. On Sunday, November 1, 2026, a special PMLA court in Ghaziabad ordered him to be placed in judicial custody for 14 days. Consequently, Azam Khan will be held at Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested him immediately after his release from Rampur Jail on Saturday.

ED Arrests Khan Immediately After Release

Azam Khan was released from Rampur Jail on Saturday evening after nearly 11 months, having received relief from the Allahabad High Court regarding two PAN card cases. His son, Abdullah Azam, was also released alongside him. Family members and supporters were hopeful that he would return home, but a team from the ED arrested him on another matter right outside the jail.

This action was taken in connection with the investigation into alleged financial irregularities and money laundering associated with the Maulana Mohammad Ali Johar Trust and Johar University. Following his arrest, the ED team took him to their office for questioning.

Court Appearance Under Heavy Security

On Sunday, the ED team brought Azam Khan to the special PMLA court in Ghaziabad under tight security. Special arrangements were made for security in the court premises. Supporters and local residents gathered there upon learning about his appearance.

During the hearing, the ED cited the need to question Azam Khan regarding the funding of Johar University and the money trail associated with it. The agency requested 14 days of custody from the court, but the court ordered him to be held in judicial custody for the same duration.

Investigation into University Funding Intensifies

The entire case revolves around Johar University located in Rampur and the Maulana Mohammad Ali Johar Trust. The ED is investigating the sources of funding for the university's construction and the funds utilized. Allegations have surfaced regarding the misuse of government funds and financial irregularities related to the university's establishment.

The agency is examining the financial transactions and links to the alleged money laundering. The ED has also raised issues related to funding and the money trail in court. However, the final conclusions regarding the agency's allegations will emerge only after the legal proceedings.

Azam Khan to Remain in Dasna Jail

Following the court's order, Azam Khan will be sent to Dasna District Jail in Ghaziabad. He has been placed in judicial custody for 14 days. This turn of events, occurring shortly after his release from jail, has sparked political turmoil.

Attention will now be focused on the upcoming legal actions and the ED's investigation. Azam Khan's troubles related to financial transactions associated with Johar University do not appear to be easing anytime soon.
