Ayushman Bharat's Impact on Healthcare

New Delhi, March 24: The Ayushman Bharat scheme, also known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, is significantly benefiting millions of economically disadvantaged families in India by offering free treatment for severe health issues, thereby alleviating financial stress. In Nala Sopara West, the Sopara Hospital, operated by the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, stands out as a prime example, providing entirely free and high-quality healthcare services to those holding Ayushman cards.

Jaleel Sheikh, whose father is a beneficiary, shared his experience, stating that his father, who suffers from lung issues, had serious breathing difficulties. “I brought him to this hospital in Sopara West. Thanks to the Ayushman card, we are receiving complimentary treatment here,” he remarked, emphasizing the scheme's accessibility for critical health conditions.

Similarly, Iqbal Sheikh’s wife recounted her story, noting that her husband had been hospitalized for 18 days and was receiving free care. “He was struggling to breathe. He has been here for 18 days, getting free treatment, and he is doing much better now,” she explained, highlighting the scheme's positive effects on both health and family finances.

Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) is recognized as the largest government-funded health insurance program globally, offering an annual health coverage of ₹5 lakh per family for secondary and tertiary care hospitalizations.

As of March 2026, over 43.52 crore Ayushman cards have been distributed, which includes 1.14 crore 'Vay Vandana' cards specifically for senior citizens. The initiative encompasses more than 1,900 medical procedures across 27 specialties, allowing beneficiaries to access cashless and paperless treatment at any of the 36,229 empaneled public and private hospitals throughout the country.

There are no limitations regarding family size, age, or gender, and all pre-existing conditions are covered from the outset.

The coverage extends to diagnostics, medications, surgical procedures, ICU fees, and doctor consultations, along with additional support for up to three days before hospitalization and 15 days after discharge.

Recent enhancements between 2025 and 2026 have further expanded access. Citizens aged 70 and older now receive ₹5 lakh in annual coverage, irrespective of their socio-economic background, and seniors in already enrolled families receive an extra ₹5 lakh top-up.

Approximately 37 lakh families of frontline workers, including ASHAs, Anganwadi Workers, and Helpers, are now part of the scheme. As of April 2025, Delhi became the 35th state/UT to adopt this initiative, and a special campaign from January 15 to April 15, 2026, is assisting remaining eligible beneficiaries and seniors in obtaining their cards.

With institutions like Sopara Hospital leading the charge, Ayushman Bharat is committed to ensuring that quality healthcare remains accessible, affordable, and free for millions of families across India.
