Avinash Sable's Remarkable Return to the Track

Indian track athlete Avinash Sable has made a triumphant return to the 3000m steeplechase after overcoming a significant knee injury. His victory at the Indian Athletics Final Series on Thursday marked a pivotal moment in his journey back to competitive racing.

Sable faced a challenging recovery after suffering torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus injuries during a fall at the Monaco Diamond League in July 2025. After more than a year away from the sport, he clocked an impressive 8:32.39 to secure first place, finishing ahead of Shubham Bhandare (8:50.31) and Vikash Dalal (8:50.43). This win comes just in time as he prepares for the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

Sable Reflects on His Comeback Journey

"I was out of competition for 14 months and faced repeated injuries. Returning after such a long break brought immense pressure. When you're at the top, you tend to forget the struggles," Sable shared.

"It was a tough experience. I lost my confidence and felt like a novice athlete. I doubted my ability to jump and was even afraid of small heights. However, I motivated myself and am grateful for the support from my team throughout this journey," he added.

The Path to Recovery

Following his injury in Monaco, Sable underwent surgery and embarked on a rigorous rehabilitation process. He made his competitive return in August at the IFAM Oordegem meet in Belgium before re-entering the steeplechase in New Delhi.

Preparing for the Asian Games

Sable's recent victory is crucial as he aims to defend his gold medal in the men's 3000m steeplechase, which he won at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. His national record stands at 8:09.91, and with only 18 days left until his event on September 28, he is determined to maximize his preparation time.

"I have 18 days to prepare for the Asian Games. I will focus on my training and ensure I am ready for the competition," Sable stated.

He expressed confidence in his preparation, stating, "I am hopeful to remain fit for the upcoming Asian Games. My training is stronger than it was before the last Commonwealth Games, and I aim to convert this opportunity into a gold medal."

A Successful Comeback

Sable's victory in the steeplechase is not just another win; it symbolizes his resilience and determination to return to his previous competitive level. He expressed gratitude to his support team, acknowledging their role in his comeback.

In the women's 3000m steeplechase, national record holder Parul Chaudhary finished first with a time of 9:22.42, although she fell short of her national record of 9:12.46. For Sable, the most significant takeaway from this event is the restoration of his confidence as he heads into the Asian Games.
