Austrian Teen Lilli Tagger Shines at 2026 Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series
Lilli Tagger's Impressive Performance
At only 17 years old, Lilli Tagger from Austria has made a significant impact at the 2026 Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series, successfully advancing to the quarter-finals of the event. As the seventh seed, she currently holds a career-best ranking of World No. 128 in Women's Singles. In the Round of 32, she triumphed over India's Vaishnavi Adkar in straight sets, setting her sights on a strong tournament finish. Tagger gained recognition in 2025 when she won the Junior Roland Garros Singles title, marking her transition from a promising junior player to a serious contender on the professional circuit. Since then, she has maintained her momentum on the WTA Tour, demonstrating remarkable maturity and consistency.
First Impressions of India
This marks Lilli Tagger's inaugural visit to India, and she expressed how the experience has profoundly impacted her. "It's my first time here in India, and it's very different from European cities. It's very special and interesting. There are a lot of things you can learn just by being here, and I would love to explore the city a bit more," she remarked.
Compliments for Tournament Facilities
Tagger also shared her thoughts on the playing surface and facilities at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA). She noted, "The courts are very good. It is a bit slow, so it is a little challenging physically, but that is part of the game. The facilities here at the venue are great, and so are the people. That helps us prepare for our matches and creates a healthy competitive environment, where people can learn from each other. The organisers have done a very good job."
An Unconventional Path to Success
Lilli Tagger's swift ascent in tennis has been shaped by an unconventional journey. Growing up in the mountains of Austria, she initially spent her childhood skiing. She began with ping pong before transitioning to tennis, largely influenced by her grandmother. At the age of 14, she made the courageous choice to leave home to pursue her tennis dreams. "I was based in Austria until I was 14, and then I left home and moved to Italy, near Venice, to train at an academy. For the last two and a half years, I've been traveling on tour," she explained.
Focusing on Growth Over Winning
When discussing her objectives for the Mumbai Open, Tagger stated, "Of course, the goal in every tournament is to try to win it, but we focus more on the process and on improving my game. We can't control whether we win or lose, but we can control the work we put in."
Upcoming Match
Lilli Tagger is set to face Japan's Eri Shimizu in her Round of 16 match at the 2026 Mumbai Open WTA 125K Series on Thursday, February 5.
