Australia has announced the return of captain Pat Cummins, leading fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, and seasoned off-spinner Nathan Lyon for their upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh. This announcement comes as the trio recovers from injuries, and they are included in a 13-member squad revealed on Monday.

A Busy Schedule Ahead

The series, set to take place in Darwin and Mackay in August, marks the start of a challenging period for Australia. They are slated to play a minimum of 20 Tests over the next 11 months, culminating in the Ashes series in England, with a potential World Test Championship final also on the horizon.

Selectors Express Optimism

George Bailey, the national selector, expressed his satisfaction with the return of the experienced players. He stated, "The NSP looks forward to welcoming back Pat, Josh, and Nathan. They have put in significant effort, both individually and with the sports science and medicine teams, to recover from their injuries."

Bailey also mentioned that additional players are on standby due to the packed international schedule. He noted, "While this squad consists of 13 players, we have others ready to step in if needed as we approach these matches. The upcoming year will likely provide more opportunities across all formats for various players."

Squad Changes and Team Dynamics

Cummins, Hazlewood, and Lyon replace Michael Neser, Todd Murphy, and Brendan Doggett, who were part of the squad for the last Ashes Test in Sydney earlier this year. The latter three are on standby for the Bangladesh series.

The squad also reflects a transition following Usman Khawaja's retirement from Test cricket. Cameron Green and Beau Webster, who played together in the middle order during the Sydney Test, are expected to continue, with Green likely moving to the No. 5 spot.

Jake Weatherald retains his position at the top of the order after partnering with Travis Head throughout the Ashes, while Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith remain the established No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

Josh Inglis has been named as the reserve batter and wicketkeeper after participating in two Ashes Tests last summer.

Bowling Selection Challenges

The return of Hazlewood introduces a selection challenge, as Scott Boland has performed impressively during the Ashes in his absence. Boland has taken 82 wickets in just 19 Tests at an impressive average of 18.58 and has remained injury-free.

Cummins has played only one Test since last July due to a back injury, while Lyon is back after recovering from a hamstring injury that required surgery following the Adelaide Ashes Test.
