On Wednesday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed the nation, announcing several measures in response to the ongoing global energy crisis stemming from the conflict in West Asia. The conflict between the USA-Israel and Iran has now entered its second month, causing significant disruptions to shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy trade. This situation has led to rising energy prices, supply interruptions, and limited production.

National Fuel Security Plan Implemented

In response to these challenges, Albanese stated that the national cabinet has adopted a national fuel security plan aimed at assisting citizens in the event of severe supply disruptions. In a video message posted on social media, he acknowledged that the upcoming months would be difficult and emphasized that no government could promise to eliminate the pressures arising from this conflict. He assured that every possible effort would be made to shield Australia from the worst impacts of the crisis, highlighting the importance of unity and mutual support during these uncertain times.

Measures Following International Precedents

This announcement follows similar fuel-saving measures implemented by Pakistan, which included reducing the workforce and adopting a four-day workweek. Sri Lanka had previously declared all Wednesdays as holidays and tightened fuel rationing.

Albanese revealed that his administration has halved the fuel excise tax, a measure that will remain in effect for the next three months. "Today, we have reduced the fuel excise tax, cutting 26 cents off every liter of petrol. You will start to see this saving at your petrol stations," he stated. Additionally, he mentioned that heavy vehicle road user charges for truck drivers have also been eliminated.
