Sydney, April 20: Authorities have charged a 41-year-old man in Australia following an alleged attempt to smuggle 200 kg of cocaine into the nation via maritime routes.
On Monday, a collaborative announcement from federal law enforcement and police in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland revealed that the suspect was apprehended last Thursday after cocaine was discovered aboard a seized catamaran.
The organized crime task force intercepted the vessel while investigating a suspected operation by a criminal group linked to outlaw motorcycle gangs, which aimed to transport cocaine into Australian waters and subsequently transfer it to local boats for delivery to shore.
It is claimed that the catamaran departed from the Tweed River in northern NSW, close to the Queensland border, on Tuesday to retrieve the drugs and was intercepted on Thursday upon its return.
Alongside the cocaine, authorities reported finding 100,000 Australian dollars (approximately 71,500 US dollars) in cash on the boat.
The man from northern NSW faces a charge of importing a significant quantity of a controlled substance, which could result in a life sentence if convicted.
Investigations are still underway to identify the crew and the vessel involved in bringing the cocaine into Australian waters.
Previously, on March 24, another individual was charged for allegedly attempting to smuggle 20 kg of heroin into Australia from Thailand.
The Australian Border Force (ABF) and Australian Federal Police (AFP) reported that a 26-year-old man from NSW was selected for a baggage check upon arriving at Sydney Airport from Bangkok.
During this inspection, ABF officers discovered 34 vacuum-sealed bags containing a total of 20 kg of heroin.
Authorities estimated the heroin's value at 10 million Australian dollars (around 7 million US dollars), enough for approximately 100,000 street deals.
The case was handed over to AFP officers, who arrested the 26-year-old and charged him with importing a commercial quantity of a controlled drug, also carrying a potential life sentence.
AFP Detective Superintendent Morgen Blunden emphasized that this incident underscores the relentless efforts of organized crime groups to exploit international travel routes for illicit gains.
