Auqib Nabi's IPL Journey Begins

Auqib Nabi is poised to make his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Delhi Capitals this season, following an outstanding performance in domestic cricket that led Jammu and Kashmir to their inaugural Ranji Trophy victory.

Irfan Pathan Reflects on Nabi's Early Talent

In a discussion on JioStar, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared his first encounter with Auqib Nabi. He recalled, "I first noticed Auqib in 2018 while mentoring the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team. We aimed to build a robust squad of fast bowlers, and Auqib was a standout. His ability to bowl long spells, particularly in Under-23 and junior matches, was remarkable. Additionally, his skill in late swing was impressive."

Nabi's Domestic Success and IPL Auction Highlights

The 29-year-old bowler took 60 wickets during the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, playing a crucial role in Jammu and Kashmir's first domestic title win. He achieved this feat over 10 matches (17 innings) with an impressive average of 12.56, including seven five-wicket hauls, making him the tournament's leading wicket-taker. Following his domestic success, he was acquired by the Delhi Capitals for ₹8.4 crore during the 2026 IPL auction.

Pathan Praises Nabi's Bowling Technique

While Nabi may not bowl at high speeds, his precision in length and line distinguishes him from other fast bowlers. Pathan explained, "The key to his effectiveness lies in his bowling action, which remains aligned within his body structure. Auqib's hand stays close to his shoulder, enhancing his line. His seam position, particularly with the new ball, creates significant movement."

"His wrist position is exceptional, allowing him to bowl with a straight seam. Many international bowlers, like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, share this trait. Although Auqib doesn't reach 140 kmph, his deliveries quicken off the pitch, consistently swinging away from batters while also surprising them with deliveries that come in. This dual capability is a major asset for Auqib Nabi," Pathan concluded.
