Attack on Assam Rifles Convoy in Manipur Leaves Two Soldiers Dead
Tragic Assault on Security Forces in Manipur
Authorities reported that on Monday, suspected militants ambushed a convoy in Manipur, resulting in the deaths of two Assam Rifles personnel and injuries to several others. A senior police official indicated that the incident occurred around 1:30 PM in the Nungshang Khong area of Ukhrul district, where the attackers opened fire on a convoy of 40 Assam Rifles. Additional forces have been deployed to the region, and a search operation is underway to locate the assailants. Expressing condemnation of this ambush, Manipur's Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam stated that such attacks undermine ongoing efforts to restore normalcy in a state plagued by violence. In a post on social media, Konthoujam expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate attack on the Assam Rifles convoy in Nungshang Khong, Ukhrul.
He assured that security forces would take all necessary measures to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure they face strict legal consequences. Since ethnic violence erupted between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in May 2023, security forces have been conducting search and dominance operations in sensitive areas of Manipur. This conflict has claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands. Despite ongoing efforts to restore peace, the state continues to face some of its most severe security challenges.
