The Election Commission is preparing to announce assembly elections in four states and one union territory after March 15. With the final voter list for West Bengal published, the deadline for appeals has passed in other regions. The upcoming elections are expected to have fewer phases than in 2021, with increased security measures, especially in West Bengal. The voting schedule is likely to take place in early April and May, as the assembly term concludes on May 7. The Commission has also appointed returning officers for all constituencies in West Bengal, ensuring a smooth electoral process.

Upcoming Election Timeline

The Election Commission is poised to announce assembly elections in four states and one union territory anytime after March 15. This date also marks the deadline for filing appeals against the final voter list of West Bengal, which was published on February 28 and includes a total of 64 million voters. In the other states and union territory—Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry—the deadline for appeals against the final voter lists has already passed.

Election Phases and Security Measures

Sources indicate that the upcoming assembly elections will feature fewer phases compared to the 2021 schedule, which included eight phases in West Bengal, three in Assam, and single-phase voting in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry. To facilitate elections in a shorter timeframe, there will be a significant increase in the deployment of central forces, particularly in West Bengal. Reports suggest that the total number of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel deployed may exceed the 1,500 companies (approximately 140,000 personnel) assigned for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections in 2024. Currently, around 500 CAPF companies, comprising approximately 45,000 personnel, are already stationed in West Bengal.

Voting Schedule and Judicial Oversight

It is anticipated that West Bengal and Assam will have multi-phase elections, while Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry may conduct voting in a single phase. The term of the West Bengal assembly concludes on May 7, suggesting that voting could take place in early April and May. The Calcutta High Court has appointed judicial officers to continue processing approximately 6 million 'suspicious' cases in West Bengal, allowing for further appeals before tribunals. According to sources, the Election Commission will publish supplementary voter lists, including those approved by judicial officers, as directed by the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

Appointment of Returning Officers

In a related development, the Election Commission issued a notification on Thursday regarding the appointment of returning officers for all 294 constituencies in West Bengal, following the state government's agreement to provide the necessary senior officials as requested by the Commission.
